Hello Riseup Collective! đŸ‘‹

The nettime mailing list is looking for a new host and I suggested in a meeting today that Riseup might be a good place to migrate to.

nettime dates back to 1995 and is a space for discussing intersections of art, technology, networks, media, research, politics, and practice. The list is currently around 2000 subscribers, and up to 200 messages/day (but certainly not every day!)

We are looking to migrate our list to a provider like Riseup, where we align on values, and where we don't have to manage all of the complexities of modern email systems by ourselves!

Would you be open to taking on hosting for our list? Ideally we would also want to migrate our archives as we feel they are an important archive of net history.

More info on our list here: https://nettime.org/

Thanks,
John (they/them)

Hi,

I wanted to let you know we got this request.

Yes, running email and list servers is a sisyphean task :( And it keeps getting more difficult over time.

We are barely keeping things together ourselves. Our sympa install is very old and is going to be very difficult to move forward because of forks from the original software but also due to the history of lists in the system. Moving this forward is going to take tons of work to migrate those existing lists forward. We have been writing tools to do that migration, but it's pretty slow going. You might want to wait for us to accomplish that before moving.

You seem to have a bunch of lists, would you move all of them? For historical ones that weren't in use, where you wanted the archives online, you could probably disable send and receive but still have the archives public. You could probably also just host the archives on a website somewhere without needing to manage all the email stuff. Maybe even archive.org?

Let us know how your discussion is going.

Thanks

Oh and one other thing: we aren't currently setup to be able to do custom domain hosting for lists. It should be possible with both postfix and sympa, but as this system has only ever been "lists.riseup.net" there are probably assumptions baked-in to configs that would need to be fixed. Also SPF/DKIM/DMARC (and ARC in the future) requirements. Not impossible, but would take some work.
