I do not understand why I can't get to my account. I went through the process of changing my password, but now it seems to be "closed". I am utterly confused and stuck.

After an account is not used in over a year, it gets disabled. You can re-open it not changing your password, but login into https://account.riseup.net. Go there, login and it should be re-opened. Changing your password doesn't trigger the re-enable process
