I just created my account, how can I have a dot (.) instead of an hyphen in my user name ?

I'm sorry but it's not possible. After gmail started to use the "dot" as an option character (making user.name the same as username), some folks assumed that it was a common situation everywhere and end up with a bunch of problems in our side. We were forced to remove the usage for dots in usernames or aliases
