Can you please explain this failure involving SORBS (which is never a good thing). For several days emails from a friend went into a black hole. This is the message of the failure he received:

---------------------------------------------------------

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

>>> xxxxxxxx@riseup.net (after RCPT TO): 550 5.7.1 Service unavailable;

>>> client [69.168.97.48] blocked using dnsbl.sorbs.net

----------------------------------------------------------

Everything is working today so I suspect that my isp - Spectrum - took care of it. Would appreciate your thoughts on what happened. Thanks.

Hi,

The system trying to deliver the email(69.168.97.48 aka smtp.hughes.net) to riseup is listed on a few block lists

https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist%3a69.168.97.48&run=toolpage

riseup uses a few high quality block lists to block spam/viruses/etc. If a system is listed on one of the block lists we use, it is known to be a source of spam.

I'm guessing your friend uses a hughes.net email account? They should contact hughes.net (or use a different account to send).

Thanks,

Thanks. That was very helpful. This is a recurring problem for him with Hughes.net. Does SORBS monitor only mass spam mailings or is individual content censorship also a criteria in the mix? IOW, does anyone know exactly what SORBS monitors or is it a "black box"?

There is a little info at

http://www.sorbs.net/listing/aboutlistings.shtml
http://www.sorbs.net/overview.shtml

We've found SORBS is pretty reliable, but in order to reduce the chance of any false positive listings our servers are configured to require that a host is listed on both SORBS and another block list. So in this case it was that hughes.net was listed on multiple block lists that we use, which is pretty definite that they aren't doing their job in preventing their system from being used to send spam.
