It has happened at least twice that overnight my emails disappeared from my inbox. I thought that by accident I sent them to the trash folder, but they are not there either.
What could be the reason?

Do you have multiple devices configured to pick up your mail? If so, perhaps you have one of them configured to download and delete the mail from the server.
If not, I'd suggest that you change your password to make sure that there is not secondary device that is doing this, and then see if the problem occurs again.
