Personal email encryption and mail clients

Xristos a posé une question...
Hello,

regarding the new personal email encryption feature, if I enable it, I will still be able to download my emails on Thunderbird via POP3 and send email using SMTP, right?

Thank you for all your hard work!

Hey..
Yes, you will still be able to do the same thing you were doing previously. The only difference is that with the personal mail encryption, no even riseup system administrators will be able to decrypt and read your email nor give it to 3rd parties. Its more like an assurance thing in case been force to reveal user information ;)

So, where during the process my email client logs in, is the new password used?

The process is transparent for the final user:
You login with your client (webmail or app mail client) and if username and password are correct, that password unlock a secret that is used to decrypt your messages. All this happens on the mail server software using a plugin called trees (https://0xacab.org/riseuplabs/trees), the client just need to give the correct credentials and receive the information that is expecting (pop3 or imap protocols).
There is no new password (except if you change your previous one), just the activation of this encryption feature.
Hope this helps you have a clearer view on how your email is working.
